Something from Nothing

The other night my son was helping me take down the last bit of Christmas decorations, and he began to get frustrated with how to arrange them in a box so they would fit. I told him when he gets frustrated with a task, just stop to take a break, and then it will come to him how to successfully accomplish it. He did, and it did.

Today’s message “Something from Nothing” speaks to a similar story and begins with a quote from Carl Sandburg: “One of the greatest necessities in America is to discover creative solitude.” Today’s message speaks about how Elias Howe figured out the hole (eye) of the needle needed to go at the end of it and not at the top like a hand needle.

Howe decided to take a break, and as he wandered in his mind, a remarkable scene came to him. He said he was about to be cooked alive and a warrior came at him with a spear with a hole in the tip of it! The writer says, “The pivotal discovery in the invention of the sewing machine…had eluded the inventor in his conscious intellectual efforts, but came to him poetically, graphically, in his moment of reverie.

Creativity thrives on doing nothing…”. We must take time and take breaks, giving our minds the opportunity to wonder. Some of our greatest “Ah Ha” must will come.

Colossians 4:2-4 says, “Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with thanksgiving. At the same time pray for us as well that God will open to us a door for the word, that we may declare the mystery of Christ, for which I am in prison, so that I may reveal it clearly, as I should.” In the same way that our Father gives us the word, He gives us the wisdom we need in every situation. We have to take the opportunity to pause, pray, and be patient for Him to show us the way.

Let us never let anything or anyone get in the way of accomplishing what we set out to achieve as placed in our hearts and minds to do through Christ.
